The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) has been renamed the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) to reflect the fact that the program is designed for students interested in any of the health professions. These outstanding programs are hosted at Columbia, Howard, Louisiana State, Rutgers, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, UCLA and Drew University (combined), University of Florida, University of Iowa, University of Louisville, University of Nebraska, University of Texas-Houston, University of Washington, and Western University of the Health Sciences. SHPEP provides academic enrichment, professional development, clinical experiences, and financial planning workshops to freshmen and sophomore undergraduate pre-health students. Designed to recruit underrepresented students into the health professions, according to the SHPEP website, “these students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.” The deadline for applying to the SHPEP is March 1st.
